What does artificial grass involve and how does it work?

Artificial grass installation involves several key steps to ensure a high-quality, long-lasting result. Here's what the process typically includes:

  1. Site Preparation
The area is cleared of existing grass, plants, and debris. The ground is then excavated to a certain depth (usually around 3-4 inches) to make room for the base layers.
  2. Installing a Weed Barrier
A weed membrane is laid across the surface to prevent future weed growth from coming up through the artificial grass.
  3. Base Installation
A layer of crushed stone or aggregate (such as type 1 MOT) is spread over the area and compacted to create a solid, stable foundation. This ensures proper drainage and prevents the artificial grass from shifting or sinking over time.
  4. Levelling and Smoothing
The base is carefully leveled and smoothed out, ensuring a consistent surface with slight slopes where necessary to allow for water drainage.
  5. Laying Shock Pads (Optional)
For extra cushioning and softness underfoot, shock pads can be installed before laying the artificial grass, particularly in areas for children or pets.
  6. Installing the Artificial Grass
The artificial grass is rolled out over the prepared area. It's trimmed to fit perfectly around the edges and any obstacles (like trees or garden features). Seams are glued together if multiple pieces are used.
  7. Securing the Grass

The grass is secured in place with landscaping nails or stakes around the perimeter to prevent it from moving or lifting.

  • Final Touches
The grass is brushed again to lift the fibers and ensure a natural, even appearance. The installation is inspected to make sure everything is smooth and secure.

The result is a beautiful, low-maintenance lawn that looks and feels like real grass, ready to enjoy year-round!
